The Delta

The trip package had Go First flights to and fro. And Go First filed for bankruptcy voluntarily in May first week! MakeMyTrip (MMT) turned out to be spineless. They told us we have to book our flights on our own and they will give back the Go First refund when it comes. And  are not committing on anything. While the flight charges in case we book ourselves are very high. So I asked them to postpone or cancel this trip due to a material event. They said they will cancel as per policy and and can not tell me how much money we will get. One lady in their ops told (not explicitly, I extracted this) me cancellation refund will be as low as 15% of the money I have paid.

I am traveling from this

So appropriate packing was done including winter clothing and medicines. At high altitude sunrays are stronger (although we can't perceive this since temperatures are low). Our skin gets damaged and we use a lot of moisture as humidity is low as well. So although I don't like using chemicals on me unnecessarily, I had to pack sunscreen and moisturiser. Pragmatism wins over principals.

By the way D left for Chicago on 5th May. Her situation there is very entertaining :P. She being a late to bed late to raise person she found it difficult to believe that breakfast at her stay has a timing of 6.30 am to 8.30 am. :) Now she is living in a different routine. Circumstances.....

Dumra [May 15]

Today I am checking out of Leh and travelling towards Nubra (or Dumra locally). Nubra is also a river. Nubra has lower altitude than Leh but we need to cross a pass on the way which is at a higher altitude. Nubra has better vegetation due to the milder climate as a consequence of lower altitude. The roads again and again reminds me that I am travelling through a cold dessert, with minimal flora and rare fauna.  Also as we started gaining altitude, I could see some grand views. It started snowing as we further went up. I am seeing a snowfall after a long time.      After sometime all one gets to see is white. As the snow was fresh I was able to grab a handful. And Abdul helped with this click. Then we reached the highest point (altitude) of this trip at Khardung La, at 17,582 feet (or 5,359 m as per wiki) above sea level. The height mentioned at the location was however 17,982 feet. It has the second highest motorable road in the world. This pass connects the Ind...

Pangong [May 16-17]

Food and hospitality in Sandfields guest house in Nubra was homely and welcoming. After having the simple and wonderful breakfast at the guest house, we started travelling towards Pangong Lake today. Lake is locally called Tso in Ladakh, so its called Pangong Tso as well. I bid adieu to the sand dune dessert. Then we got to meet Shyok river and the river stays with us for a long time. This is of course since people like roads to be as much low lying as possible and so does nature - want its river to be. I was wondering why there is no vegetation even when there is so much of water available although the climate the harsh. Abdul mentioned maybe since the soil is not fertile. We stopped at a spot in the river and I relaxed on the bank of the river for sometime, listening to the gushing water.         In many stretches on the way its off-roading and there is no proper road. While other roads are more proper. Its definitely a challenge to drive through these single ...

Closing [May 18-19]

Having well rested, today I plan to cover the rest of the attraction on Manali-Leh highway including Hemis monastery, Shey Palace and Thiksey monastery. Since we had fewer places to cover today, started a bit late at 10.30 am. Abdul as usual was before time at the hotel. We first set out to Hemis monastery that is about 45 kms from Leh. Since the highway is well maintained the ride was smooth and quick. This is the largest and the wealthiest monastery in Ladakh and is situated inside a national park. Abdul told me they declared this a national park since in the past sometime they spotted a snow leopard here, but once declared a park the leopard was never seen again. :) Hemis is well known for the annual festival where a big Thanka (religious scroll painting) is displayed. I could see the stage over which this Thanka is displayed. This monastery is rich because it has a great collection of ancient remenants of artifacts, stupas, kitchenwares, Bhuddha statues etc.  There was some amo...
